Variable data labels are labels in which the printed information varies from one label to another. Each label can feature a unique QR code, serial number, barcode, production date, batch number, scratch-off code, or other variable information. They are typically produced using digital printing technology without the need for printing plates, making them ideal for unique product identification, anti-counterfeiting and traceability, promotional campaigns, and prize draws.
Variable data labels are widely used in the cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical, alcoholic beverage, and other industries, and can be combined with various label materials and technologies, including self-adhesive labels and UV transfer stickers.
What materials are available for custom variable data labels?
The key material requirements for variable data labels are a smooth surface, good ink absorption or ink adhesion, and sufficient contrast to ensure reliable barcode and QR code scanning. The following are commonly used material options.
| Material type | Material | Feature | Application |
| paper | coated paper | smooth surface, brillante printing color, suitable for normal indoor room temperature | warehourse barcode label sticker; assets labels; labels for packing boxes |
| thermal paper | can be printed without a ribbon | short-term applications such as logistics and inventory circulation | |
| Plastic Film | matte silver PET | waterproof, abrasion-resistant, and chemical-resistant; a compatible thermal transfer ribbon is required for printing. | suitable for electronic products, asset management, and variable data labels requiring long-term durability |
| synthetic PP | Combines the paper-like appearance and feel with the water resistance and tear resistance of plastic | suitable for labeling cosmetic, personal care, and hair care product bottles | |
| PE | excellent flexibility and conformability | suitable for frequently squeezed bottles |
Material Selection Recommendations: For labels applied to cosmetic bottles, PP synthetic paper is recommended for its water and tear resistance, while PE film is ideal for squeezable containers. For applications requiring long-term durability and resistance to alcohol wiping, PET is a suitable choice. For indoor use in dry environments where cost is a priority, coated paper is generally sufficient.

Die-cut Individual Stickers
Through die-cut,the backing paper is cut through to the exact custom shape of your label sticker. Usually delivered as individual, loose stickers.
Buying Tips for Adhesive Labels in Roll
If you order adhesive roll labels for automatic labeling machine, please consider three points: label unwind direction, core diameter, label roll diameter and quantity of labels per roll.

Label Unwind Direction
Also known as label roll direction—refers to the specific orientation and edge of a label as it peels off a roll, absolutely vital for machine application. The above picture only show the direction of labels on the out side.

Core Diameter
Label core diameter refers to the inner diameter of the cardboard tube that custom labels are wound around, critical for machine application. Standard core diameters: 3 inch (76mm), 1 inch (25mm), 1.5 inch (38mm)

Label Outer Diameter
Label outer diameter (OD) refers to the total thickness of a full roll of adhesive labels. The outer diameter of the label rolls shall physically fits onto the external unwind arm of your printer or automated labeling machine.

Quantity per Roll
The quantity per roll for adhesive labels could be specified. Although customization is possible, the quantity per roll is not unlimited, subject to physical constraints imposed by the printing equipment, the labeling method, and the label material itself.
